Bring Back Beatrice Book Review

Naming your baby is one of the most important decisions you can make for your child. In our culture now days, we are getting some crazy names, like Apple. Or every one is naming their kid the name of the year, like Scott or Jennifer, Michael or Sarah.

When you pick a name for your kid, you have to imagine them using it for the rest of their lives in intervies, or their name being announced over intercoms.

In the world of baby naming, the clever has become ridiculous and the unique has become trite. Consider this: In 2009, American parents thought they were breaking the mold by choosing seemingly distinctive names like Ava and Aiden. But in reality, there were 17,082 Aidens and 15,730 Avas born that year.

Bring Back Beatrice, by Jennifer Griffin (one of MANY many Jennifers born that year) is all about the classic names, that are full of meaning, has taste, character, and a little bit of attitude. She was overwhelmed herself with the books on baby names, with all too many names or following the "tredy" names, which she wanted to avoid. She has never been anyone's only Jen, so her book is full of names that are a celebration of traditional names, one that urges parents to explore names worth rediscovery or a second look.

For example; Adelaide,Gillian, Liana, Ruth, Giovanni, Jonah, Lawrence,Lazarus, Miles, Orlando, Vaughn, Zayden to name a few.

Each name is followed with a description, pronunciation, names it relates to, nicknames, and little diaper pins are next to names coming back into the "trendy" names.

Need to name your baby? You can pick up your own Bring Back Beatrice paperback book from Workman for $10.95

~Zookies Review and Giveaway~ **CLOSED**

WHO DOESN'T LOVE FLUFF???? I know I do. I'm sure you all have your favorite brands, along with favorite styles (i.e pocket, AIO, AI2, cover and prefolds, fitted, wool...)

I'm not sure how many of you use WAHM diapers!?! But what a wonderful way to support a mom while putting adorable, handmade fluff on their rumps! I found one mama who makes her own diaper covers at Zookies! I found her through Facebook (gotta love that network eh?)

Zookies has some adorable fabrics to chose from! It was so hard to chose which pattern to review! I've been wanting owls for a while though, so that's the one I chose! I also got it in a size large for my daughter, who is 23 months and 26 pounds.

I was so excited to get fluffy mail! I had to wash it and try it on my daughter the day we got it! I'm not the biggest fan of covers and prefolds, but it's such an adorable cover I'm nearly won over! Later on I ended up getting a fitted snap diaper I used under it instead that I much prefer. Either way. This diaper LOOKS so cute! I love the way she wrapped it up when she mailed it too.

My daughter loves to have her picture taken so of course she was happy to model our new Zookies diaper.

She could also wear it comfortably under her clothes, not so bulky as some diapers are.

My first few uses, it worked great! I just reuse it and change the prefold after wetting, wiping it out after each use. After a full day of use I had to wash it. I line dry covers, so I had to wait for it to dry to reuse, which doesn't take long.

My second time using it however, I did have a leak through right away. I think my daughter just wet really heavy though because I haven't had another leak since with that cover.

Most covers I have have the second leg wing (you know what I mean right?) to help hiold things in so it a new experience trying a cover without. I wasn't sure how it would work with my little ones who are heavy wetters and massive soilers.

The fabric is adorable! I have been wanting an owls diaper for some time and it works fantastic! I wouldn't use it over night or at nap time since it didn't hold well for a super soak, but a great every day diaper cover.

Zookies has also now come out with a One Size diaper cover!! Perfect for newborn to potty training.

BUY IT:You can buy your own Zookies for $15 on etsy or her website, http://www.zookiescrafts.com/. Her one size diapers are $16.75

WIN IT:You can win your own diaper cover of your choice! Just use the form below to enter. Giveaway ends 4/6/11. This giveaway is open internationally for all my fans! Give a big thanks to Zookies for that!!!

There goes my spring dreams....

SO I had all these BIG dreams and ambitions, even started spring cleaning and potty training. Only to have them dashed away by 17 inches of snow!! So my days have been consisting of (instead of cleaning) shoveling out vehicles and my mailbox which the county plows have so graciously knocked over twice now. I have to go to the post office to pick up my mail until the snow melts a little more because it is really buried now. :-(

Well, that is life! hopefully in a few weeks things will start looking up again, and I can restart my potty training and Spring cleaning! I hope you're enjoying your weather where ever you may be...

~Zubels Review and Giveaway~**CLOSED**

I don't know about you, but I LOVE stuffies for my kids. I particularly LOVE handmade ones. I remember when I was a little girl my great grandma making me Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy dolls. (Can't find those any more huh?) Nothing beats a handmade toy they can love and snuggle with!!

That was my appeal to Zubels!

About Zubels; *Copied from their facebook info*
Zubels are each hand knit with 100% super soft cotton using eco-friendly dyes. Each one is also hand stuffed to make them huggable and loveable. Their subtle textures, vibrant colors and hand embroidered details spark imaginary play. Every doll has a distinct personality just like every child!

So not only are they adorable little stuffies, but they are eco-friendly and baby-safe!

I was sent one of the Zubel's organics, Pom Pom Pam for my daughter. It came with a rattle inside, which my son loves (he's under 6 months).

Zubels has a cute selection of other "zu animals" and friends you can find on their website at http://www.zubels.us/

Some cute baby toys they make. "Long Arms"

I love this rock and roll monkey!!

My opinion of the Zubels:
As soon as I got it, my daughter wanted it. She watched me open the package with this intuition that it was for her and immediately claimed the "baby" carrying it around all day. Check one for kid appealing.

I gave it a "once-over" for quality. Nothing un-stitching, all parts seem in the right place. Very well hand crafted. (Did I mention I LOVE handmade things?) It had a rattle inside so I had to make sure there was no escape for that since I have a little guy who would love to put anything small in his mouth! The hair was even adorably stitched into curls!

It's too girly for "his" toy but I let my baby play with it and he loved to shake it with the rattle inside and chew on it. Which I felt safe allowing him "eat" since it was organic cotton and non toxic dyes.

I love all their animals and would love to get more for my kids! The only down side is they are a bit more expensive then your average children's stuffies. Just remind yourself they are handmade and eco-friendly though and it's a fair price!

BUY IT: You can buy your own Zubels and accessories ranging in prices from $5 to $35. Head to their website to find a store near you that sells Zubels.

WIN IT: Zubels has offered one of my fans your very own Zubel! It is of their choosing, so you will have to list whether it is for a boy or girl. US only. Use the form below to enter. Giveaway will end 3/30/11

~EcoSprout Review and Giveaway~ **CLOSED**

I'm not sure how many of my readers are cloth tapering parents, but I am....of 2 kids under two! If you do cloth diaper, than you are aware one of the biggest challenges is the stink! If you don't wash them just right you are left with an ammonia smell. Only its a hidden smell! Meaning you THINK you washed them right THIS time because they smell fresh. Then your kiddo pees just a tiny bit and BAM you are hit with an overpowering ammonia smell. It is one of the moat frustrating thing to endure.

I have been using one of the biggest name brand cloth diaper soap available. I soak my diapers in hot water with said soap, then rinse then wash again with more soap and another rinse. It just doesn't always get out the smell. I hate to reach it just to avoid the smell so I am changing diapers more frequently.

Then I found Eco Sprout through Facebook. They sent me a few sample packs of their cloth diaper safe detergent for review! I did the same process, just with a different detergent. I tried their unscented, In The Buff, detergent first.

After drying my diapers on a low heat with wool dryer balls, (winter here so no line drying!), they came out nice and clean. Any stains on the diapers before hand were minimized. But the true test for us is after use. So I put a fresh diaper on each of my kids, after an hour or two there still wasn't the ammonia smell so I checked to see if they wet, sure enough! It really helped pull out the ammonia smell! But I thought I should give it another try. This time with their scented detergent. First I tried the Lavender Chamomile, then the Warm Vanilla Sugar. Eco Sprout really does the job every time!

Eco Sprout was started by a WAHD, that's right... a Work-at-home-dad who was looking for a cloth diaper detergent that was great for not just cloth diapers, but for the entire family's laundry.
Frustrated by trying various detergents over and over, nothing ever seemed to kick the ammonia smell, both on the diapers and in the pail! All the usual remedies were tried, baking soda, vinegar, special products made just for the ammonia, pail scents...you  name it!  It just got to be overwhelming. There had to be a way to just use one product and simplify the washing process.
Once that thought entered his head...the research began. It wasn't easy, he wanted something that was environmentally friendly, biodegradable, and 100% natural. But it had to work! It had to CLEAN the diapers too.  After months of trial and research he finally did it! Came up with the perfect balance that resulted in clean diapers, derived from natural ingredients, 100% bio-degradable, and kicked the ammonia smell!
Samples were sent out, family and friends began to use the product and the word got out. Soon thereafter, Eco Sprout was born!
We are a small family run company with complete attention to quality control. Each batch of Eco Sprout is hand made and mixed, ensuring a pure batch.  We want families to know that small changes can make a big difference! Changing to an all natural detergent that is highly concentrated limits waste. Less is more and all of that...
We will continue to strive to provide earth friendly products that are natural and safe and will help families go green from the ground up!
We appreciate all of your support, and every order that we receive.
Warmest Regards,
The Eco Sprout Family

I'm so excited to have found Eco Sprout and their natural detergent! (I'm a sucker for organic/natural!). It works great for removing the diaper stink, plus its great for all your regular laundry too, if you aren't one for separate detergents. They are the go-to diaper detergent for removing your ammonia smell.

"Eco Sprout detergent is an environmentally friendly, all natural detergent that's great for your entire family. It is SAFE for cloth diapers and sensitive skin. Our detergent is free from dyes, brighteners, enzymes, phosphates and is 100% biodegradable. Finally, a clean you can trust!"

The only thing I did notice, or didn't for that matter, was any scent from the scented samples. I couldn't smell any scent in the bag or on my laundry. Maybe it was just the sample size, or something on my end, but once I make it through most of my other cloth diaper detergent, I WILL be getting some more Eco Sprout to try out again!!!!

BUY IT: You can buy your own Eco Sprout at http://www.ecosproutsoap.com/
Comes in 3 different sizes:
  • 48oz bag : 48 to 96 loads*
  • 24oz bag:  24 to 48 loads*
  • 2oz sample bag: 2 to 4 loads*
Prices are 48oz $13.98, 24oz $7.98, or 2oz $1.75. They have a variety of scents and of course In The Buff unscented.

Dapple Product Review

I don't know how many of you like to clean your kids toys, but I like to give ALL my kids toys a good cleaning every so often. Especially during the winter time, particularly when other kids come over to play.

One hitch though, I hate to use lots of harsh chemicals on the toys! I prefer organic baby products. Last thing I want is my kid to be sucking on a toy that's covered in chemicals! Along came Dapple. they make natural cleaners!!

Dapple sent me some of their natural baby products to try out.

I received a dish towel, a travel size bottle of dish soap, and travel size pack of toy cleaner.

First thing I tried out was the toy wipes. They look like a regular wipe (in size and white in color). You just wipe over any surface to clean. My kids have allot of big toys that are too big to wash in the sink, so I tried these wipes out on those toys. i.e. bouncers, plastic ride-in cars, swing, etc.

The wipes at first leave a bit of soapy streaks, but after going over a few times it all balances out. They pick up all the dirt of the toys, leaving them looking clean. It's so nice to have clean toys, without using harsh chemicals!

Next I tried their travel size dish liquid. It worked great. Soaking some messier pots and pans for a few minutes before washing helped remove all the residue. I did notice it smelled like lavender and tea tree oil. Which isn't one of my most favorite scents. But overall it works great.

If you need baby safe cleaning products check out their site for a list of products. You can buy your own Dapple products at http://www.dapplebaby.com

I received these items for free in exchange for this review. Not a paid review.

Noah's Ark The Animals Tell the Tale book review

If you haven't noticed by the previous book reviews, I love Bible stories for my kids (faith challenging books for myself). The joy I have reading Bible stories to my kids led me to choose Noah's Ark The Animals Tell the Tale by Julie Coy published by Dorrance Publishing. It was listed under juvenile religious. I wasn't sure which age it was aimed at.

When I received the book and read it, I can still say, I am not sure which audience it was aimed at. It has the general idea for younger kids (animals being the main character.) It talks to the reader at times as though a child no older than 4, has a story line for an 8-10 year old, but quotations for adults. It's a bit all over the place for age range. I'm not exactly sure when I would have my kids read this book.

It is an okay story line, following that of Obie the ostrich during the time of the flood, how God has a purpose for him during this time, and a the obstacles he must overcome to help save the animal kingdom. But Obie struggles with believing he is the right bird for the job.

It jumps around a bit though going from the animals to the humans. Plus the beginning starts out quoting the Bible almost verbatim. Which, I would rather just read the actual Bible story to them. It also starts chapter 1 with the Garden of Eden. Now, I understand the connection, we started this story somewhere. But this story is suppose to be the story of Noah's Ark. I believe the Garden of Eden should have been part of another story. NOT to mention the fact that they leave the story at "And the rain continued for forty days and forty nights." It gave the general idea that the animals would be safe and the story would pass on from generation to generation, but I believe they should have included the boat landing safely and the animals getting off the ark.

Noah's Ark: The Animals Tell the Tale
by Julie Coy The Lord God spoke to Noah and told him how disappointed he was with the world. Noah found favor in the eyes of God, so God told him to build an ark. This ark would save Noah, his family, and animals from the coming flood.
God also visits Obie the Ostrich and tells him the important role he will play. It is up to one young bird to save the animal kingdom! But the trip is long and hard. Obie is frightened and scared. In fact, he believes that God may have picked the wrong bird for the job. God shows him that from the one whom the least is expected, great things can occur. He was created for a reason! Will he be able to hold on to his faith and get back to the ark in time?
About the Author Julie Coy grew up reading and hearing Bible stories and one of her favorites was Noah's Ark. When not writing she enjoys coordinating conferences and workshops, reading, travelling and Bible study.
(2009, paperback, 58 pages)

God Gave Us So Much book review

I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review. god Gave Us So Much by Lisa Tawn Bergren; illustrated by Laura J. Bryant. It's a limited edition 3 book treasury.

The book is based around Little Cub, (a polar bear) and his family, talking about the different things God has given us. How He made us all different, how He gave us love, and gave us heaven.

Book description: Through the eyes of a curious little polar bear, young readers are invited into engaging journeys through the Arctic North Pole to explore some of their most tender-hearted and important questions.

Mama, Papa, and Grampa Bear, the ever-loving and wise guides for Little Cub’s adventures, share with her the incredible miracles of God’s creation and the depths of His love for her.

With heart and humor, the stories reveal the beauty of diversity throughout the world, the incredible gift of love, and the wonderment of our Heavenly home to come.

This book is adorable! It's simple enough for young kids to understand. A great door opener for parents who aren't sure where to start talking to their kids about God. ~Boogie Wipes Review and Giveaway~ **CLOSED**

There is nothing worse in the winter than little ones and their colds. My little ones have had terrible runny noses this winter! I just hate to use regular tissues or toilet paper because their poor little noses get all red and dry and sore.

So....in comes boogie wipes!!

Boogie Wipes are made with natural saline to dissolve boogies (mucus) caused by the common cold, allergies or otherwise booger-filled kid moments.

Extra soft, alcohol, phthalate and paraben free, Boogie Wipes are available in Great Grape, Fresh Scent, Magic Menthol and Simply Unscented. Recommended by pediatricians as a gentle, effective alternative to a dry tissue.

A little about the creators: *Copied from their website*
Often referred to as The Boogie Moms®, friends Mindee Doney and Julie Pickens developed the first ever saline nose wipe called Boogie Wipes® as a solution for their kids’ sore, red, runny noses.  Using the idea, their business backgrounds and mompreneurial spirit they formed Little Busy Bodies, Inc in May, 2007.  After an intensive research and development process, hiring a chemist, surveying consumers and interviewing manufacturers, in December, 2007 they sold their first pack of Boogie Wipes.  Sales went on to reach $1 Million their first year of business.  Little Busy Bodies now operates out of Beaverton, OR and employs 12 full-time employees (9 moms) including Julie as CEO and Mindee as CMO. The company tripled their revenue in 2009 at $3.4 Million. They now offer 11 saline nose wipe products to 50,000 retail stores across the US and Canada including; Wal-Mart, Target, Walgreens & Toys”R”Us. Their adult line of nose wipes, Achooz, will launch this spring.

My experience
I was sent a large pack of the grape scented boogie wipes and a ton of samples of the other kinds, I even got 2 samples of the adult line, Achooz. Let me tell you, they are SO handy to just throw a pack, or the single use packets, in the diaper bag, or in the glove box of the car. Then I ALWAYS have a wipe handy made just for their little noses! I'm not sure if you experience this or not, but my daughter smears her boogies over her face trying to wipe them off with her hand, and by the time I get to her face they start to dry on her cheeks. The saline wipes are great for taking off all those dry boogies without needing to scrub them off.

Another thing, they don't hurt my children's noses at all! Usually a tissue they start to fuss and pull away but with the boogie wipes they sit still and let me get them all off!

I'm not the biggest fan of the grape scent, but I'm not a candy kind of person (and its a candyish grape) but I imagine the kids enjoy it! I am also not a fan of using menthol on children. The fresh scent and the Simply unscented are my preference.

Boggie wipes little plush toy named "Boogs" they sell on their site is pretty cute!!

They sell teacher kits and diaper cakes as well!!

Boogie Wipes is willing to let one of my fans try their own boogie wipes! "I can offer one of your readers (2) packs of 30-count wipes (fresh, grape, menthol, or unscented– combination varies)"

Use the form below to enter to win your own boogie wipes! Giveaway ends 3/16/11.

~GoGreen Pocket Diaper Review and Giveaway~ **CLOSED**

I just have one thing to say about GoGreen Pocket Diapers. BEST. DIAPER. EVER.

Convinced yet? No? Well let me explain....

GoGreen has the cutest selection of pocket diaper fabric. Here's a few to show you:

Plus tons more. They have silky fabrics, silky print, pastel colors, and fuzzy fabrics. They are all SO cute! If that's still not enough to convince you....here's a little more...

These diapers are a One Size diaper! You can use them from birth to potty training! In case you can't do the math...(or just don't want to), using disposable diapers can cost you $240 for the first 6 months of a babies life, if you buy the average $20 box, going through them on average of 10 days. That's allot of money. GoGreen Pocket Diapers are some of the CHEAPEST cloth diapers I have found! (PRICE WISE, NOT QUALITY WISE!) Allot of cloth diapers can cost almost $20 a diaper! GoGreen diapers,..get this...average at only $8-$10 a diaper! So buying 12 diapers only costs about $120! (12 being the average largest pack to buy most cloth diapers in, making your laundry day with one child, nightly or every other night depending on their age).

The snaps on the diaper make it easily adjustable (and not confusing to anyone who has never cloth-diapered). Which go a little something like the picture above. (NOT FROM GOGREEN. JUST A SAMPLE PHOTO TO SHOW YOU SIZING ADJUSTMENT WITH SNAPS.)

If you still need more to get you to go try these diapers, here's a little something about the creator:
*Copied from their website*
Our Story: Shortly after I had my third child I found myself buying diapers for 3. Not only did the costs really add up, but we were getting charged extra by the city of Boulder, CO for the ludicrous amount of trash we produced. I had never considered CLOTH diapers before, but, timidly, I purchased brand-name pocket diapers at nearly $20 a pop. To my surprise, they worked spectacularly, and were nothing like the leaky, prefold things with which I was familiar. No leaks, better absorbency, they were perfect! Except for the price. There's got to be a cheaper way to get pocket diapers, I thought- and then I found them, high-quality diapers for half the price! In fabulous colors no less! I gave the pocket diapers to all my friends and they LOVED them. People kept asking me how to buy them, and that's how this website came about. I wanted to make it really easy for everyone to get these wonderful diapers. They're better for babies, better for bank accounts, and better for the environment. And, dare I say it, they make diaper changing fun! Please visit our products page to see our ginormous selection of pocket diapers.

My experience with this diapers has been wonderful! They are very trim fitting to my children. I have yet to have a leak with these diapers! The diapers also come with an insert (which you place into the pocket for absorption).
Here is the inside of their diapers, as shown on their website. These diapers are SUPER soft as are the inserts. They really wick away moisture from your babies bottoms! They are also really easy to clean with a diaper sprayer and some good cloth safe laundry soap. I have tried every diaper from Applecheeks to Zookies (some really great diapers in there) but GoGreen has become my NEW favorite diaper!!! So much so that I went ahead and purchased more....

I got...

...this....
..and this....
Plus I got the fuzzy giraffe print but I can't copy that picture for some reason.
I also got their pail liner. Which their factory made by mistake out of vinyl so they are selling for $3.90! it has a zippered bottom so no reaching in and pulling out dirty diapers! Just lift, and unzip over your washer.

I also got their dry/wet bag!!! You know how much wet bags average!?! Well, they usually fit about 8 diapers, plus inserts and sell for $15 to $20 from other companies. But from GoGreen they are only $7.99!!! It works great and is super durable! I wasn't sure what to expect for only $8. But it is amazing.

Here's some pictures of my kids in my gender neutral diaper I received from GoGreen for free in exchange for my review!

My daughter LOVED to model her diaper! I would say, let me take a picture of the side, so she turned. Now your butt. And she stuck her butt out. She was too funny modeling this diaper!!!! :-)

I will say the diaper fit a little nicer fully opened on my daughter than on my son in the small postition. But it still worked great on both kids!

BUY IT: You can buy your own GoGreen Diaper here; http://www.gogreenpocketdiapers.com Great prices and great selection. The only down fall is, they are waiting on shipments, so allot of their diapers are currently sold out! I was so sad to see some of the prints I LOVED not available for a little while. But maybe some other time I can get some more of their diapers!

WIN IT: That's right! GoGreen has offered one of my fans a one sized pocket diaper!!!!!!!!! Winner choses boy/girl/gender neutral, and GoGreen picks the fabric since their selection is low while waiting for shipment! Just use the form below to enter! Giveaway will end 3/11/11.

~Tushy Roll Review and Giveaway~ **CLOSED**

I found Tushy Rolls on facebook. They looked like adorable changing pads, so I thought I'd send her an email. She sent me her "frogs" changing pad. Which turned out great because I have a boy and a girl, so it's gender neutral. Not to mention we have a "frog:" theme for our daughter!

Frog themed fabric as shown on the website, http://www.tushyroll.com/

Tushy Roll description; *copied from their website*
Tushy Rolls are approximately 20" wide and 34" long.
They are ALL HAND MADE! They have an absorbent stabilizing liner in between two coordinating fabrics that compliment each other.
Each one comes with an attached strap that makes securing the rolled up Tushy Roll easier.

My experience;
If you are anything like me, you HATE using public restrooms yourself, so a public changing station for my kids,..that's just gross. All the regular changing pads I have from my diaper bags are so small they barely cover any surface area! Which is annoying with a toddler. Plus, I don't know if you realize this, but when you fold it back up and put it back in your diaper bag, you are just putting all those germs against all your stuff since they only fold one way with the back sticking outwards!

I LOVE my tushy roll! It covers the ENTIRE changing station. Plus, it rolls up so the back is facing inwards only touching the back fabric. Not all your stuff. It fits perfectly into my diaper bag. Plus, it's cuter than any other changing pad I have.

When we first got it, I wasn't able to use it for over a week since my kids were sick and we needed to stay home. So instead I used it as a floor play mat for my son to do his tummy time on. He loved touching the fabric, grabbing at the pictures.

It's also easily washable, I have no problem tossing it in the wash with my other dirty laundry. It holds up well.
